The Dun Mountain Helibike Trail
Maximum Height: 960m Distance: 10km Grade: Price: $640 per person for 2 people $450 per person for 3-5 people $ on request for 6+ people
Trip Details

This classic hike and mountain bike trip provides enjoyable wilderness adventure only minutes from Nelson.
A 15 minute trip by 4WD on a gravel road takes us to the helicopter for the short flight from the Maitai Dam to Dun Saddle, at 960 metres in Mount Richmond Forest Park.
From the exposed and lunar like alpine terrain of Dun Saddle, we gain stunning views into Mount Richmond Forest Park and west to Tasman Bay. A ¾ hour walk through the curious vegetation of the mineral belt around an old chromite mine sees us at Windy Point, where the helicopter has left our double suspension Giant Trance mountain bikes.
Walking and riding for the first half hour, the trail gradually opens up beneath mountain beech forest to a 2 metre wide track along the site of the original railway. The trail winds down toward Nelson, eventually passing through pine forest, with excellent views of Nelson and Tasman Bay, before finishing on a single track alongside the Maitai River.

Rameka Track
Maximum Height: 800m Distance: 20km Grade: Price: $500 per person for 2 people $350 per person for 3-4 people $ on request for 5+ people
Trip Details

This ride can be accessed by either 4WD or helicopter from Motueka, or Awaroa on the Abel Tasman coastline.
A slightly more technical ride (3 out of 6 ) than Dun Mountain, the track follows an old pack route from the top of the Pikikiruna Range at 800 metres, down to the Takaka Valley floor at almost sea level, over a distance of around 12 kilometres.
The first 40 minutes or so is through beautiful native bush on generally ridable single track, with the odd challenge of tree roots, boulders, loose rocks and fallen logs. A few short creek crossings are unridable (unless you are an ace). A short steeper section, which can be walked, leads to a winding track through open farmland, the Rameka gorge and ultimately to Takaka Valley.
