Want to go Heli-biking in New Zealand? Take a scenic helicopter flight to the Ben Ohau Mountain Range between Twizel and Lake Ohau. Land in a remote location high above Twizel and mountain bike with your guide along secluded tracks through varied terrain with stunning scenery, back down into the valley.



All our Heli-bike Tours start from Twizel. Prices include the scenic helicopter flight, an experienced Mountain Bike Guide, a mountain bike helmet and any transport to and from the start and finish points. Additional mountain Bike equipment and high quality, full suspension GT Sanction 2.0 mountain bikes are available for hire, if required.

All our Helibike trips have a maximum guide to rider ratio of 1 guide for up to 5 riders so you will enjoy the mountain bike ride at your own pace, be that fast or slow. As a consequence, because we restrict the numbers on each trip, please book early for peak dates to avoid disappointment.

1. Grand Greta Helibike Adventure

Grade: 3 - Intermediate (Intermediate fitness required)
Duration: Allow 6 Hours, October to May
Price: $499 per person plus $50 bike hire, if required

The Grand Greta Helibike Adventure is our premier trip. We meet in Twizel, sort out bikes and gear, then ride out to the airport. A scenic helicopter flight takes you over Twizel, the canals and along the Ben Ohau Mountain Range. A short but worthwhile walk from the landing site takes you up to the summit of Ben Ohau with its amazing 360-degree views over Lake Ohau and Twizel. Then, you mountain bike down constantly changing scenery from rocky farm track through a mountain gorge, a remnant beech forest, down grassy banks and, finally, you end up on the shores of the beautiful Lake Ohau. There's a short cycle along the gravel lakeside road to the pick up point where you're collected and driven back to Twizel. You get to see some of the most varied scenery and terrain you'll find on any single Helibike experience in New Zealand!

2. Omahau Downhill Helibike

Grade: 2 - Easy (Intermediate fitness req'd)
Duration: Allow 4 hours, all year round
Price: $379 per person plus $50 bike hire, if required

The Omahau Downhill Helibike is a great trip for the novice mountain biker or someone who wants to enjoy the scenery as much as the biking. This trip is perfect for couples and families. Enjoy a helicopter flight to one of our landing sites on the Ben Ohau range behind Twizel. Cruise down easy 4WD and farm tracks with panoramic views of the Mackenzie Basin and the beautiful Lake Pukaki. Ride around the base of the mountains and finish with an hour long fast and flat ride to Twizel along side the river and through the Pelennor fields Lord of the Rings film site. Depending on the weather, we usually stop for an optional swim in one of the local's swimming pools, the warm Lock Cameron or the slightly cooler Twizel River!

This video shows one of the trips we have organized in the past that's perfect if you want to get a real feel for the New Zealand High Country but have a limited time. Imagine a unique half-day New Zealand experience including 3 personalised trips in one. A 20 minute helicopter flight with views over stunning scenery including glaciers, Aoraki Mount Cook and turquoise glacial lakes. A mountain bike down a 600m vertical descent, suitable for any ability, where you can even take an optional swim in one of the pristine mountain tarns (small lakes). Finish the experience with a visit to a working high country sheep farm.
